Eugene T. Lyons, PhDGluck Equine Research Center, Department of Veterinary Science |
Research in the Classical Parasitology section of the Department of Veterinary Science, University of Kentucky, continues the direction started over 50 years ago. That is, to do research on the control and transmission on internal parasites of domestic animals - especially horses. Virtually all drugs on the market for removing nematodes, tapeworms, and insects (bots) were tested here as independent evaluators of the efficacy of these compounds on internal parasites of horses. Our research, as pioneers of discovery of drug resistant parasites in horses (and sheep), has been orientated towards multi-year study of the equine small strongyles which are resistant to most of the commercially available parasiticides. Transmission of equine parasites also is an important aspect of our research. The purposes of these studies are to follow the changes of prevalence due to use of parasiticides, to determine the treatment regimen necessary to c ontrol parasites, and to determine whether the compounds are as efficacious as they were when they first came on the market. |

inducted into
Equine Research Hall of Fame
September, 2012

The University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Foundation inducted Eugene T, Lyons into the UK Equine Research Hall of Fame Sept. 23, 2012 at Keeneland Race Course along with George Allen, a posthumous inductee formerly of UK’s Gluck Equine Research Center and Stephanie Valberg, University of Minnesota.
Eugene T. Lyons, originally from Yankton, South Dakota, joined the faculty in the UK Department of Veterinary Science in 1963. In his more than 45-year career, Lyons’ work continues to attract interest in the field of equine helminth infections. He was the first to demonstrate the transmission of helminth parasites in milk of mother seals to their offspring; this observation was later extended to a number of equine helminth infections and altered current thinking on the epidemiology of different endoparasitic diseases of the horse.
Lyons is also recognized for the importance of his contributions to the field of acquired resistance of small roundworm infections in the horse to various anthelmintic drugs. More>
